City of York Council - Local climate action to electrify public transport in the city.

2015 onwards

As the introduction of Low Emission Zones (LEZs) in cities across the UK is growing, the electrification of public transport is becoming essential.

Providing one of the largest zero-emission bus services in the UK, City of York Council enlisted the help of the Phoenix Works for the design, supply and install of suitable electric bus charging infrastructure to provide a reliable and sustainable service to the city.

The Phoenix Works have installed a number of EV charging projects across the city. Our relationship with York Council started in 2015 and is ongoing with annual support and maintenance provided to support the city’s low carbon initiatives.

The Phoenix works assisted the city in providing a full turnkey solution, designing, supplying and implementing the charging infrastructure necessary to run the electrified bus route into the city centre. As this was one of the first electric bus route in the north, we paid particular attention to the capability of the installed infrastructure and its location in order to ensure the service was successful.

Our design identified a requirement for seven 50kW chargers. Our analysis considered each sites power availability, charger location, vehicle accessibility and the environmental impact of the station. We identified that the best charging location was a terminus shared by two routes operating in a figure of eight. The location allowed for vehicles to receive a rapid charge of 10-15% of battery capacity twice a day as they passed through the terminus. This would be in addition to the overnight charging they would receive at the bus depot.

The City of York electric bus charging project presented a number of challenges initially, including designing the necessary charging infrastructure, significant civil works, DNO applications and liaison, tight installation deadlines and management of grid infrastructure upgrades.

Our dedicated project manager’s effort and effective management meant that all needs were met, ensuring a safe and efficient delivery of the program, installed in just six days to minimise disruption to the city.

York’s Ebuss route is part of the City of York Council’s ambition to become net-zero by 2030 and our involvement throughout the design has enabled the city to see an estimated reduction of 1.6million tonnes of CO2 each year.
